Residential Surcharge

UPS Ground residential: $6.50 per package (2026); UPS Air residential: $7.00. FedEx Ground/Home: $6.45.

A flat per-package fee added to any delivery the carrier's address database classifies as a home. It appears on the vast majority of direct-to-consumer labels and is barely touched by the discount you negotiated on transportation.

Delivery Area Surcharge (DAS / Extended)

UPS DAS residential: $6.55; UPS DAS residential extended: $8.85 (2026). Stacked with the $6.50 residential surcharge, a residential extended-DAS delivery carries ~$15.35 in surcharges before fuel.

A fee for delivering to ZIP codes the carrier deems less efficient to serve. The ZIP list grows every year, often silently, and the 'extended' tier stacks on top of the residential surcharge — so a single rural home delivery can carry two surcharges that together exceed the base rate.

Fuel Surcharge

Ground fuel surcharge has reached roughly 18–20.5% in recent periods; recalculated weekly against a published index. On a $35 invoice, the fuel line alone can be $4–$5.

A percentage-based surcharge that adjusts weekly with an index. Legitimate in concept — fuel is a real cost — but extractive in application: it is frequently calculated on the marked-up subtotal including other surcharges, not on the base transportation charge alone.

Dimensional Weight

Divisor of 139 for daily/domestic rates (166 for retail). A 12×9×6 box = 648 cu in ÷ 139 ≈ 5 lb billed even if it weighs less. The divisor is negotiable; a worse divisor silently inflates every shipment.

You are billed on the greater of actual weight or 'dimensional weight' — package volume divided by a divisor the carrier sets. Two recent rule changes (a worse rounding method and a smaller effective divisor band) quietly inflate the billed weight on the same boxes.

Additional Handling Charge (AHC/AHS)

UPS 2026 Zone 7 examples: AH-Weight $55.00, AH-Dimensions $38.00, AH-Packaging/Other $31.50 per package. Carries a 40 lb minimum billable weight when triggered by dimensions.

A fee triggered by size, weight, packaging, or — newly in 2026 — cubic volume thresholds that are easy to cross by accident. It carries a minimum billable weight and is frequently applied in error.

Address Correction Fee

UPS 2026: the greater of $1.65 per package OR 12% of total shipping-charge corrections during the invoice period (raised from 8% in the prior period).

A fee charged when the carrier corrects an address — including corrections its own address validation could have caught at label creation. For 2026 the per-invoice percentage component rose from 8% to 12% of shipping-charge corrections.

Peak / Demand Surcharge

Residential and air peak surcharges have increased roughly $0.40–$2.05 per package; large shippers can face up to ~$7.50 (Ground) and ~$8.75 (Air) per package during peak weeks. Recent peak increases ran in the 7–9% range.

Seasonal uplifts originally tied to the Q4 holiday window that have expanded in scope and crept toward year-round application. Per-package amounts are modest but apply to the bulk of e-commerce volume during peak weeks.

Base Transportation Charge

Varies by weight and zone. On a 3–4 lb residential package to a distant zone, the base charge is often barely half the total invoice once surcharges and fuel are layered on — frequently under 51% of the line.

Negotiated Rate Discount

Discounts off base transportation can be substantial for volume shippers; the discount band on protected surcharges (residential, DAS, peak) is much narrower or zero. The gap between list and negotiated on base alone is often the single largest available saving.

Not a charge — an entitlement most small shippers never claim. When an account is linked and rates are requested correctly, carriers return discounted negotiated rates instead of list. Many SMBs ship at list rate without knowing the discount is sitting there.
